 M'akous?

[Do you hear me ?]

"M'akous" (in the Greek language) or "Do you hear me" (in English) is an original composition created from sound fragments recorded in situ using a portable transmission and receiving FM radio system (92,5FM Sympathy Radio). The presented sound piece is composed as a musical counterpoint between individual and collective soundscapes experienced by the participants.

Sympathy radio is set (in 92.5 mhz) in radio receiver devices which enables the simultaneous hearing (though air-born and bone-conduction methods) of different and remote points of the same place, in real-time. “M’akous? (Do you hear me?)” is a sonic journey that begins at the hills and industrial zones around the Volos (GR) area, and travels from several points of this city’s center to the Saturday nightlife of the Bairro Alto District in Lisbon (fall 2022), to the shopping street in Athens (Ermou st) at Christmas, and to Cerisy-la-Salle in Normandy (Spring 2023) during the « How does the world sound » seminar for B-AIR.

FM92.5 Sympathy Radio has a dual character; that of a sound installation and a sound performance where two sound broadcasters real-time record and transmit their sounds on the FM92.5 frequency. Their sounds (composition) are therefore retransmitted by radio waves to listeners who are wearing bone-conduction audio headsets. Listeners are hearing, by walking around the place, simultaneously (naturally and by bone conduction) the surrounding sound environment and the sound compositions of the two sound broadcasters who are broadcasting from a distance. Real-time heard sounds are merged with the transmitted ones and the participants cannot be sure of what is real and what is not.

This dynamic hearing is reinforced by the affordances of the movement engagement of every living organism involved in the performance (people, birds, leaves, flowing water, sea waves etc.). It is installed on the performer's bodies and moves along with them, as a medium which tries to augment their sensitivity and connect them to their environment.

It is more like a process of sympathy between the participants and their sound environment. M'akous? is then the result of these multiple, varied listenings to the World, open to the sensitivity of our environment in crisis. The composition intertwines the ordinary listening of places of life and communication and is parasitized by the vulnerabilities of our world.
